The shooting last night in Las Vegas is horrific. We are holding in the Light the victims, their families, and their communities.
We are holding in the Light the emergency and medical personnel who continue to work to save lives. And we are holding in the Light our country, as we confront this latest demonstration of the epidemic of gun violence that plagues our society.
Our elected leaders have a responsibility to keep us safe. They are failing us.
Even as details of this crime are being pieced together, one thing is clear: our country’s decision to allow easy access to guns permits this violence. We must not accept that, in our country, ordinary activities – such as going to a concert, a nightclub, or school - put us at risk for violent death. Yet that is the country we live in today.
Our elected leaders have a responsibility to keep us safe. They are failing us. In the wake of previous mass shootings, Congress has debated – and done nothing to stop these kinds of tragedies from happening again. We must not accept that response again. Congress must act.
