We hold Kenya in the Light as the country enters into a crucial post-election period.
Join us in holding Kenya and all of its citizens in the Light as they enter into a tense post-election period.
On August 8 Kenya held national elections to select its next president, members of Parliament and local leaders. Credible, free and fair elections are an essential part of the democratic process in the United States and around the world. Kenya is the country with the highest concentration of Quakers in the world and the FCNL community has worked to support Kenyan Quakers and all Kenyans as they strengthen their own democratic systems.
The day after polls closed, as early results seem to indicate the incumbent, Uhuru Kenyatta, leading, violence has broken out in some areas of the country. Raila Odinga, the opposition leader, has claimed election fraud.
We stand with Kenyan Friends and many others who have worked to build a foundation to prevent violence in western Kenya and throughout the country.
We pray for peace in Kenya and we call on the U.S. government to ensure that it uses all of its diplomatic capacity to encourage Kenyan leaders to reject violence and peacefully resolve all disputes.
