Washington, DC – The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) praised today’s long delayed full House passage of The No BAN Act (H.R. 2214) in a bipartisan 226-171 vote. The bill would repeal the Trump administration’s travel ban against Muslims and prohibit other travel bans based on race or religion.

“Enshrined and inherent in America’s founding is the assertion that all people are created equal. This notion also extends to religion. A Muslim ban flies in face of our history and First Amendment rights,” said FCNL general secretary Diane Randall. “No president can be able to enact such racist, Islamophobic policies. This is especially true when the policies are not subject to Congressional oversight.”

FCNL strongly opposed Donald Trump’s indefinite bans on nearly all travel from 13 nations which unduly targeted Muslim-majority and African nations. These bans – in all their iterations – result in heartbreak and injustice for countless families from across the globe.

“The administration’s Muslim ban has resulted in family separations, but it has not advanced national security one bit. Instead, it has endangered our national security by tarring the U.S worldwide as an undiplomatic and unreliable,” said Amelia Kegan, FCNL’s domestic policy legislative director. “We cannot claim to be a world leader on tolerance, religious freedom, and inclusion while enforcing policies that keep immigrants out based solely on their religion.”

The No BAN Act stands for National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants Act. It outlaws discrimination against immigrants and/or those entering the U.S. based on religion, as well as existing legal protections against discrimination based on race, sex, nationality, place of birth, and place of residence. The bill would also retroactively repeal all previous iterations of the President Trump’s Muslim ban. The bill now heads to the Senate, where is prospects are less clear.
