Washington, DC – The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) endorsed the highly anticipated comprehensive congressional report, Solving the Climate Crisis: The Congressional Action Plan for a Clean Energy Economy and a Healthy and Just America, which the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis released today.

“As the world is in the grips of a global pandemic, and the United States is dealing with a failing economy and civil unrest, the overarching global emergency of climate change has not stopped or disappeared. We need leaders who will focus on and act on more than one crisis at a time. And today, with the release of Solving the Climate Crisis, the House of Representatives laid the foundation for action,” said FCNL general secretary Diane Randall.
“In many ways, the COVID-19 pandemic is exacerbating our climate problems. We cannot allow ourselves to move past one crisis just to be swept up into another global disaster. Now more than ever is the time to step up as a country and do what needs to be done to slow and reverse ongoing climate change. We must seize this opportunity,” she added.
The congressional report boldly calls for the United States to be a net-zero emissions emitter by 2050. It lays out 12 pillars that make this a realistic, achievable goal. These pillars were put together in consultations and hearings held nationwide to examine tools, policies, local actions, and other solutions that reduce the carbon and other greenhouse gases emissions driving climate change.
“As we recover from the pandemic and start to rebuild our economy, we must make substantial investments in a clean energy economy, and create equitable economic growth and jobs for all,” said Alicia Canon, FCNL’s lobbyist on energy and the environment. “It will not be easy. But time is rapidly running out to address this crisis in any meaningful way, especially for frontline communities already facing the brunt of climate impacts.”
