After Congress voted to fund the government and adjourn for the remainder of 2017 without passing the Dream Act — or similar legislation — FCNL’s lobbyist on immigration, Hannah Graf Evans, made the following statement.
“Yesterday, Congress left town once again without passing the Dream Act, maintaining the serious and unnecessary threat and stress of possible deportation for Dreamers and their families, communities, and friends. At the same moment, Congress extended funding for immigration enforcement and detention. Congress’ inaction on this issue, after so many promised action before the end of the year, is truly devastating for Dreamers and those who care for them.
“As Congress continues to postpone passing such needed legislation, millions of lives hang in the balance. Every day another 122 immigrant youth lose their authorization to work and face renewed risk of deportation. By January 3 – when Congress returns to work – nearly 15,000 young immigrants will have lost their protection.
“It is imperative Congress take up a legislative solution for immigrant youth with the moral urgency that it deserves. FCNL will continue to demand a long overdue pathway to citizenship for immigrant youth who call this country home.”
