The Friends Committee on National Legislation congratulates the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) for receiving the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.
FCNL joined ICAN this year as a partner in order to support and advance its efforts to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons.
As the Norwegian Nobel Committee stated in awarding the prize, “Nuclear weapons pose a constant threat to humanity and all life on earth.” ICAN, and the others who have worked so strenuously to create and advance the new Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, remind us that we must not, and we need not, resign ourselves to living forever, generation after generation, in the presence of these machines of widespread, indiscriminate death and destruction. Nuclear weapons are a human invention, and so human ingenuity and human reason can and must focus on freeing us from the threats these weapons pose.
