Spend a couple of hours with friends finding new motivation and inspiration for the work ahead. We’ll broadcast a special training from Washington, DC, and you’ll connect with other FCNL advocates in your area.
This fall is a critical moment for our country, and our whole network is needed to help members of Congress choose people over the Pentagon. Decisions they make on the federal budget this fall could block millions of people from getting the food and medical care they need, all the while dumping more money into war and weapons. After a challenging summer, it might feel daunting to try to sustain this level of advocacy. But Congress needs us to stand up and hold them accountable. FCNL’s network of Friends and activists will have a tremendous impact when we act together this fall — our moral, Quaker voice and our faithful witness are essential for the decisions Congress faces. This event is a chance to renew our spiritual resources: an opportunity to reflect on why we are committed to working together for peace and justice, and rejoice in the fact that we are not in this alone — there are thousands of us working together across the country.
Your house party will help you meet new people in the FCNL network, strengthen your advocacy community, and hear latest updates on our priorities straight from Capitol Hill.
When are the house parties?
Join us on September 23, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. EDT. The event will last about two hours: an hour of training from DC, and an hour of conversation and planning at your party.
What is an FCNL house party?
Find a house party
A house party is just a few people gathered to watch a training and have a conversation afterwards. It’s a low-pressure, fun way to start talking about advocacy with old and new friends.
Most house parties will be at private homes, but you could also do a meetinghouse party at your church or meeting!
Why now?
Former Executive Secretary Ed Snyder wrote in 1982:
“A supporting community and balance are essential. With warm friends, discouragement can be overcome by joy, fellowship, and good humor. Hard physical activities or creative hobbies help temper defeats. We at the FCNL are strengthened by the encouragement of Friends around the country. I sometimes wonder if those Friends, especially in isolated areas or difficult situations, know how much we appreciate the work they do.”
These words still ring true today. We’ve seen the power of organized people — stopping radical, dangerous changes to our health care system. And we know that the challenges we face will take all of us together.
How can I host a house party?
What do I need to host a house party?
To host a house party, you’ll need either a computer or TV with an internet connection- really, any electronic device that can connect to YouTube or the FCNL website!
The computer or TV will need to be in a room where a few people can sit. You can set a limit on the number of people your space can fit — we expect most house parties to be 2 to 10 people. If you’d like, you can buy or make some light snacks.
We’ll give you everything else you need! We’re with you every step of the way.
How do I get started?
Create your event on our website so that you can collect RSVPs. You can make the event private when creating the event; otherwise, we’ll invite friends from the FCNL network!
If you don’t want to host and just want to attend, find a house party near you here.
Are there any costs to hosting or attending a house party?
The program is designed to be entirely free. You have the option to buy or make snacks for the event, or post flyers around your community, but that’s totally optional.
