In late May, we told you about a back-room deal that could give $17 billion more to the Pentagon — and that would have kept the vote off the record. You stepped up, making hundreds of calls opposing the deal.
On June 9, we won!
Not only is every senator on the record on this proposal, but we successfully blocked billions more for war. Because the vote was recorded, you can thank your senators or hold them accountable for their votes.
Thank you, as always, for your work for a more peaceful world.
Here’s the original alert:
On Wednesday, June 8, your senators will vote on whether the U.S. should add $18 billion to the military budget in the next year.
Call your senators today at 202-224-3121. Ask them to vote “no” on the McCain amendment to increase Pentagon spending.
The Pentagon already gets the biggest slice of the budget pie - in 2015, more than a third of our tax dollars went to pay for current and past wars. Senator McCain wants to make that slice even bigger.
The Pentagon’s share of our budget needs to shrink, not grow. Call your senators today at 202-224-3121.
Not only does the Pentagon not need more money, but that money could be better spent on proven, effective ways to help people in this country succeed and thrive. If you had $18 billion to make our country stronger and more secure, what would you do?
Here’s one idea: for the same $18 billion Senator McCain proposes to spend on the military, we could pay for a tax credit to prevent 7.5 million workers from sliding further into poverty.
However you’d choose to spend that money, we can all agree that adding more money for the Pentagon keeps our country moving down the wrong path.
Call your senators today at 202-224-3121. Ask them to vote “no” on the McCain amendment to increase Pentagon spending.
