DACA

“We are not for names, nor men, nor titles of Government, nor are we for this party or against the other.” Rather, “we are for justice and mercy and truth and peace and true freedom, that these may be exalted in our nation … that these things may abound.”
 

This week, we were grateful that millions of people participated in our democracy and that the elections were conducted in a broadly fair, free, and peaceful manner.

Anti-immigrant statements have flooded the airwaves this election cycle, threats of mass deportation and detention chief among them. Mere dialogue around this, introduced by Project 2025 and embraced by numerous politicians, wreaks fear. Any implementation by President-elect Trump would destroy lives, tear families apart, and harm communities nationwide.

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals heard arguments for State of Texas v. USA on October 10 to determine the future of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and, in turn, the future of hundreds of thousands of people supported by the program. This case’s potential to end DACA highlights the urgent and grave need to protect our undocumented friends. 

FCNL expressed disappointment over the recent federal court decision ruling that the DACA program is unlawful.

On November 29, 2021, the Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) commented on the Department of Homeland Security’s proposed rule to preserve and fortify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

This month brought a massive win for DACA recipients. A federal judge ruled that Chad Wolf had been unlawfully appointed to his role as acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security when he issued a July 2020 memo ending Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) protections.

The House Judiciary Committee is marking up legislation outlining a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, TPS recipients, and DED holders, all of whom are at risk of deportation pending cancellation of their protections.

Washington, DC – The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) supports the Dream and Promise Act of 2019, introduced in the House today. The bill combines previous versions of both the Dream Act and the American Promise Act, which were designed to protect individuals living in the United States for extended periods of time and facing potential deportation.
