The UN climate conference (COP29) concluded last week in Azerbaijan, and I had the privilege of attending as a member of Interfaith Power & Light (IPL). While the headlines highlighted tensions in international climate diplomacy and frustration over the final agreement on climate finance, one theme resonated with me: the vital role of people of faith in urging governments to address the climate crisis.

FCNL and Interfaith Power & Light led 24 other faith-based organizations in a letter calling on President Joe Biden, Senior Climate Advisor John Podesta, and White House National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi to push for increased ambition at this year’s UN climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan.
In less than a month, FCNL’s Daren Caughron will join global leaders, climate justice advocates, and state delegates in Baku the capitol of Azerbaijan between Russia and Iran on the shores of the Caspian Sea. He’ll be there for the 29th Conference of Parties (COP29).

Our hearts are heavy for people living in the southeastern United States who lost power, homes, and lives from Hurricanes Helene and Milton. The ferocity of these storms worsened because of climate change.
As one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases, the Unites States has a moral responsibility to assist the developing countries bearing the worst impacts of the climate crisis.
