Violence Against Native Women

The legislation represents a significant step forward for tribal nations, where domestic and sexual violence occurs at unparalleled rates, and where cases involving murder or sexual assault frequently go unprosecuted.

FCNL applauded today’s long-awaited Senate introduction of the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2022.

The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) lauded the passage by the House of the Family Violence Prevention and Services Improvement Act of 2021 (FVPSA).

In our advocacy of Native American issues, FCNL follows the priorities set by Native groups. As a result, one of our top priorities is legislation to address the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigneous Peoples (MMIP).

The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL) called on the Senate to pass the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2021 (H.R.1620) after the House passed it today. FCNL strongly supports the tribal provisions in the bill.

Native American people in this country come from communities that have historically faced genocide, forced removal, and loss of resources that date back to the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the late 1400s.

American Indians and Alaska Natives face some of the highest rates of domestic violence and often go without supportive services for safety, justice, and healing. As we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month, FCNL is joining the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center, survivors of violence, Tribal governments and communities, programs, and advocates in raising awareness of this critical issue impacting Native communities across the country.
