Katherine Jones is the Program Assistant for the Justice Reform and Election Integrity team. She works alongside José Moreno, the director of justice reform, to champion FCNL’s goals of a restorative justice system and protecting the people’s right to a fair and free election.
Katherine is a native of Brandon, Mississippi. She is a May 2024 graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, where she earned a bachelor of science in Neuroscience. While at Xavier, she was heavily involved in liberation work both in New Orleans and globally. She was selected as a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow and traveled to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to explore the work of Afro-Brazilian educators and advocates empowering Black youth in the favelas.
As an NIH BUILD Research Scholar, Katherine has documented the lack of youth development programming for Black queer children. She was the president of the Sexual Assault Prevention Health Educators organization which focuses on gender-based violence, reproductive health advocacy, and educational forums. She was the president of the student council of Xavier’s Exponential honors program where she leads the peer-mentor initiative. She traveled to the U.K. to help build networks among Black British organizations to promote collaborative efforts to advance the study of the African Diaspora. Katherine served as a project assistant for a state-wide community engagement initiative funded through the National Institutes of Health to provide COVID-19 testing and vaccination to underserved communities across the state of Louisiana. Katherine also worked on the first HBCU-based Black maternal health database, where she advocated for Black maternal health rights at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.
In her spare time, Katherine loves trying new cuisines with friends, going to the gym, and reading the latest romance novels.
