A Quaker Lobby in the Public Interest

Aura Kanegis, the director of the Washington office of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and a former FCNL intern and staff member, is drawn to FCNL’s perspective on policy work because it is rooted in a Quaker approach, focused on seeking the good in all people, even if they don’t agree with FCNL on every issue.

Aura found FCNL’s quiet, deliberate change strategies especially effective when she worked in its Native American Program. She noticed that FCNL was perceived as an unexpected but influential voice on Indian health care and land trust issues because it spoke from a moral standpoint, rather from than its own self-interest.

Aura hopes to maximize these Quaker values in her work now, as she looks for ways that AFSC and FCNL can best complement each other’s work in Washington.
