Resynchronizing Payments to International Organizations: Letter to administration

Jan 19, 2010

The U.S began deferring payments to some international organizations in the 1980s to garner a one time budgetary gain. However, the practice has continued and has set an example that other countries now follow. Late payments leave organizations chronically underfunded and force them to take fiscally undesirable measures including borrowing extensively both internally and externally. For example, the U.N routinely borrows from its separate peacekeeping budget to pay operating costs. Resynchronizing dues to international organizations would rectify this problem and would ensure that the U.S. does not fall behind on its payments.
