Flagstaff Monthly Meeting
Statement of Concern on Immigration

We find that the divisiveness and fear that Arizona SB1070 creates is harmful to society. We believe that the law has increased the polarization of discussion about immigration and is rooted in fear. It instills fear of the immigrant and creates fear in all communities. It is this fear that divides us - neighbor from neighbor, family from family.

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) has been at the forefront on human rights throughout the world and more recently in Arizona, in support of a humane immigration policy and the humane treatment of immigrants. Flagstaff Monthly Meeting supports the following AFSC principles:

  • Adopt economic policies consistent with human rights and trade justice
  • Protect all workers' labor rights
  • Create a clear workable path to residency
  • Respect immigrants' civil and human rights
  • Support family reunification

Immigration is a complex issue that needs to be addressed at the Federal level. We call upon President Obama, Congress and all people of good will to come together to seek a creative and prayerful solution, in dialogue together, on immigration.
