Her name was María. Not unlike many girls and women in Latin America who are named after the patron saint of their country and mother of their savior, Jesús. She was 22 years old, the same age that I was at the time. I met her in Nogales, Mexico, at the ‘Comedor,’ a soup kitchen run by a resilient group of Jesuit nuns that provide meals to recently deported immigrants.

President Obama made a big speech this week on immigration in the border city El Paso, Texas. The policy speech highlighted the administration’s accomplishments in cracking down on immigration enforcement and focused on the economic importance of reforming the immigration system.

The Uniting American Families Act: Soon to be Introduced!

The Uniting American Families Act is a bill that ends discrimination against LGBT families by allowing an American in a gay or lesbian relationship sponsor his or her partner for immigration. It's estimated that 36,000 lesbian and gay Americans can't sponsor their foreign born partners for immigration, and around half of these families have young children. Can you imagine being in the position having to choose between your family and your country?
