What's Happening in Iraq?
In October 2009, the president has signed into law a provision affirming that the U.S. is bound by an agreement with Iraq to withdraw all U.S. armed forces and contractors from Iraq no later than December 31, 2011. The provision was the result of lobbying by FCNL and the American Friends Service Committee. Read the FCNL-AFSC press release
Earlier, however the president signed a spending bill with over $70 billion dollars to continue the war in Iraq and expand the war in Afghanistan. See how your representative and senators voted.
Before the bill passed, Congress did add language prohibiting permanent U.S. military bases in Afghanistan, but also rejected an amendment that called for an exit strategy for that war. Find out more.
In the months ahead, FCNL will continue to work to build support for the regional diplomatic initiatives that have the best chance of building momentum for peace in the greater Middle East.
Help us lay down the small but essential stones to build the road toward peace.
