The U.S. Green Building Council developed the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building certification system a voluntary national standard for high-performance, sustainable buildings that maximize sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality. There are currently about 600 LEED-certified buildings in the United States and only six in Washington, DC.
In August 2007 FCNL's building was granted LEED Silver certification.
