Your Senators Are Talking: Are They Hearing from You?
You may think that Capitol Hill is quiet since Congress is on recess, but it's actually bustling with activity. Senators and their staff are meeting to try and work out a deal that could determine federal spending and taxes for the next decade.
Make sure your opinion is in the room when the deals are being made. Tell your senators you want to see the Pentagon budget cut by $1 trillion over the next 10 years. Even if you’ve written before, please write again and then ask 5 friends to write too. This is a critical time.
Start a Conversation on Waste, Fraud and Abuse.
Even senators whom you may not think of as supporters of Pentagon cuts are open to the idea—particularly that Pentagon waste, fraud and abuse needs to be reined in. In one year, the Pentagon loses as much as $102 billion—losses that come at the country’s expense.
In the past three weeks, we’ve heard from people in the FCNL community in Texas, Washington, Virginia and Pennsylvania about productive conversations with their senators’ offices about the need to make Pentagon more accountable. Several people spoke with aides with military backgrounds who related personal experiences of Pentagon excess. Be part of bringing this message to the Hill: let your senators know that you don’t think the Pentagon budget should keep growing when the agency isn’t being a good steward of the money.
We’re coming down to the wire on budget decisions whose effects will be with us for years to come. Make sure your senators hear from you, then ask 5 friends to write too.
Sincerely,
