Your representative has an opportunity to support significant cuts to the U.S. nuclear weapons budget—if he or she acts in the next two days. Please call your representative today and ask her or him to sign Rep. Ed Markey’s letter urging cuts to the U.S. nuclear weapons budget. Rep. Markey will stop accepting signatures on Friday.

Background
FCNL lobbyist on nuclear disarmament, David Culp, has been working with Massachusetts Rep. Markey's office and other disarmament lobbyists to curtail spending on nuclear weapons as part of deficit reduction. Rep. Ed Markey has written a letter to the congressional supercommittee asking them to reduce spending on the nuclear arsenal by $20 billion per year over the next 10 years. So far 42 representatives have joined him. Our goal is to have 100 members sign this letter. PLEASE CALL YOUR MEMBER TODAY.

We believe that we have the best opportunity in more than a decade to persuade Congress to cut $1 trillion for the Pentagon budget over the next 10 years. An important place to start is with the country’s nuclear weapons arsenal. Every year the U.S. spends more than $50 billion maintaining the country’s arsenal of nuclear weapons. Today, the nuclear arsenal still exceeds 5,000 warheads.
Rep. Markey plans to send his letter to the supercommittee next week. Please help make sure your representative’s name is on it.
Sincerely,
Diane Randall
Executive Secretary
