The Friends Committee on National Legislation (Quakers) takes the long term view of the world we seek, and the specific policies and legislative priorities we advocate. In our day-to-day lobbying work, we work to identify specific, practical steps individuals can take to persuade the federal government to advance our country toward our longer term objectives. For example:
- FCNL advocates full respect for human rights around the world, and we lobby to persuade Congress to require the U.S. government to ban torture, without exception.
- we believe U.S. troops should withdraw from Iraq, and FCNL lobbies for a non-binding, congressional declaration that simply says U.S. troops will withdraw as a way to open a dialogue on this issue;
- we support universal nuclear disarmament, and we continue to work with a broad coalition to strengthen the call for U.S. diplomatic engagement with Iran and build opposition to military action.
Among our recent success stories:
House Approves Bill to Fund Civilian Conflict Prevention Experts
In early March, the House passed by voice vote the Reconstruction and Stabilization Civilian Management Act (HR 1084), which would authorize the creation of standby groups of civilian specialists with diverse skills and the capability to rapidly deploy in a crisis to prevent weak states from collapsing or rebuild war-torn states. Victory for Native American Healthcare in the Senate
The Senate voted 83 to 10 in late February to dramatically improve health care for nearly 2 million Native Americans by passing the Indian Health Care Improvement Act (S. 1200). Congress has not reauthorized the act in thirteen years, leaving healthcare services for Native Americans grossly outdated and inadequate. Find out more about FCNL's Native American Advocacy Program.
The "War is Not the Answer" Movement is Growing!
FCNL now has over 350 "War is Not the Answer" yard sign distributors and has sent out more than 400,000 "War is Not the Answer" signs in the past six years. We've distributed more than twice as many signs and bumper stickers in 2007 than we did in 2006. See where "War is Not the Answer" is spreading across the country, order your own sign, and put yourself on the map!
