Director of Development
The Position
FCNL is seeking an experienced director of development to take our fund development to a new level, leading all aspects of the program, including major donors, annual fund and on-line donations, planned giving, foundation grants and a possible capital campaign. Responsibility for fund development is grounded in our Campaigns work that engages donors and activists and oversees all organizational communications.
This leadership position has the sole focus on building and strengthening our solid development program. The director of development will be responsible for long-range fund development planning, including the possibility of a capital campaign; generating new resources; soliciting donors; leading development staff and stewarding our dedicated network of supporters for our 501©4 and 501©3 organizations. The development director supervises two major donor officers, the annual fund director, two data base managers and a contractual grants proposal developer. The Director of Development reports directly to the Associate Executive Secretary for Campaigns and will work with the FCNL leadership team, including the Executive Secretary, and the governing committee.

The Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL), a non-partisan Quaker lobby in the public interest, is looking for a dynamic, experienced director of development to increase financial support for our work to build a better world. Founded in 1943 by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), FCNL works for federal policies that advance social and economic justice, peace, care for the earth and good government. With headquarters on Capitol Hill, FCNL fields the largest team of registered peace lobbyists in Washington and engages a vibrant nationwide network of some 60,000 activists and donors.
Required Skills/Knowledge
Demonstrated comprehension and practice of the science and art of fundraising
Entrepreneurial manager and leader
Ability to build trust and communicate effectively with donors, governance body, fellow staff
Strong organizational and project management skills
Excellent communication skills in writing, speaking and listening
Ability to conceptualize and describe program as both compelling and accessible
Public speaking/presentation ability
Relevant research and computer skills
Qualifications
Minimum of 7 years of successful fundraising experience, including:
- direct individual donor solicitation of major gifts
- annual fund management
- on-line giving
- foundation grants management
- planned giving instruments and promotion of planned giving within an effective fund development program
Minimum 5 years experience in developing/coaching direct reports
Experience in non-profit advocacy/policy organizations
Dedication to policy issues consistent with FCNL's programs
Experience in managing/leading capital campaigns, including working with volunteers
